Comments on the reasonable aspect for a marriage
1. Introduction
Pride and Prejudice has been widely read ever since its publication. Its author Jane Austen, has also been regarded as a somewhat mysterious woman, for she remained single all her life. In fact, she was one of the daughters of a clergyman. Though she lived mostly in a tiny English village, she had ample opportunity to study the habits of the middle class, the gentry and the aristocracy. In this thesis, I would like to analyze this novel form the aspect of marriage by different characters, including their attitudes about marriage, their words, their behaviors. In this novel, the author reflects us a complex society through a simple plot. The wonderfully vivid presentation of character is the elite of the novel. That’s because the ten characters including their words, their thoughts and their behaviors tell us what is the reason for them to choose their partner. Jane Austen exposes the economic and social factors that decide the marriage. It was she who first brought to light what was to be one of the principle themes of the later-19th-century novels: should economic status play such a crucial role in the marriage? What is the most reasonable factor for a perfect marriage?
From the plot, we could not regard the novel as a love story, but deplore the deepest purpose of the author from the reflection by the character and their marriage, in order to master the meaning of marriage.
2. The Situation in Their Society
The story of Pride and Prejudice took place in the time of the Regency in Britain. During the late of the 19th century, Britain was at the period of transition from the earlier stage of Capitalism to Capitalist Industrialization. In their mind, with reference to marriage, there was a good way for man or woman to gain money or status. To most of them, marriage was just like a trade, the balance depended on one’s choice in the market. It sounded such crude in the marriage without emotion that time. So three out of five marriages mentioned in this novel were the typical style in their society. The aspect of marriage was money, status or beauty. But there must be some difference, such as Jane and Elizabeth’s marriage. I would discuss every two characters in each marriage in order to analyze their marriage aspects. Actually the idea for most of them to have marriage was not reasonable. Then what is the reasonable aspect for marriage? We would get a conclusion after analysis.
