A new craze called "happy slapping" may be making its way onto the streets of British cities and into the news, but not very many people are happy about it. In fact, it seems the only ones who are happy are the ones doing the slapping.
That is because a round of happy slapping involves slapping a complete stranger in a public place and recording his or her reaction on a hand-held video recorder or mobile phone. The videos are then posted on the Internet for the viewing "pleasure" of other like-minded slappers. It may all sound like innocent fun, but what is being called slapping more often involves punching. And all to often it is a group of people, usually young, who are doing the punching, not just a single person.
Increasingly violent attacks ending in death or rape have led to schools banning video devices so their students won't go around attacking people. Politicians and the police are also vowing to crack down on the "yob culture" that they say is behind the attacks and establish a "culture of respect." "Yob" is "boy" spelt backwards, and any teenager who shows disrespect for orderly behavior is likely to be labeled a yob.
But the yob culture isn't limited to just the young. Basically, it includes anti-social attitudes of any kind, from the drunken behavior of people leaving a bar after a round of drinking to the football hooliganism that almost got the British team banned from the EURO 2000 competition.
